How to Select the Perfect Size Rug

Sizing Notes

  • Always measure before you start: Before shopping for the perfect rug, be sure to measure your space and take note of the appropriate dimensions.

  • Bigger Is (mostly) Better: When in doubt, go bigger. A rug that is too small can affect the overall scaling of the room.

  • 1 1-2 ft. rule of Thumb: In most cases, you want 1-2 feet of space between the edge of your rug and the wall.

  • Be Creative: Remember these are just guidelines. Have fun with your space.

Spacing Notes:

Family and Living Room: Remember this, the front legs of the furniture need to be placed on the rug. If you have the space, place all furniture legs on the rug. The rug needs to extend 6" past your sofa / chairs on both sides. A general rule is to run the rug the length of the sofa.

Our most standard sizes for the family and living rooms are 8x10, 9x12 and 11x14.

Dining Room: You never want an undersized area rug in a dining room. The rug should extend atleast 24" behind each chair when pushed into the table. You want the chair to still be on the rug when you pull it out. You will need an 8x10 or 9x12 ft for a typical dining room table

Our most standard sizes for the dining room is 8x10, 9x12 and 11x14.

Bedroom: This tip can help make a big difference. The foot of the bed should sit on the rug, but the headboard and side tables should not.

A good rule is to make sure your feet would touch the rug when you get out of bed. You need it to be 8-18" smaller than the length and width of the room. Place the rug longways and center it on the bed. The rug needs to run slightly beyond the end of the bed.

Our most standard sizes for the bedroom are 8x10 for a queen bed and 9x12 for a king bed.
